Final expense insurance

Small, permanent whole life coverage meant to settle funeral, burial, and last expenses — so the people you love inherit memories, not bills.

In plain English
  • Final expense is typically whole life with a smaller face amount, often $5,000 to $25,000.
  • Underwriting is often simplified. That can mean a faster yes, and a higher cost per thousand of coverage than fully underwritten life insurance.
  • It is built for burial, funeral, medical leftover bills, and a little breathing room — not for replacing a working income.

Who it fits

Older adults who want a policy that cannot expire at 80. People who were declined for larger term or whole life. Anyone whose main goal is that the family is not passing a hat for a funeral. If you still need income replacement, start with term life and use final expense only for the burial piece, if at all.

What we watch for

Graded death benefits (a reduced payout in the first two years). Waiting periods. Premiums that are high relative to the benefit. We compare carriers and say so when a different product is the better use of the same dollars.
